Purcell Parlour Gallery: Julia Purcell

Julia has been drawing and painting ever since her university days in Technical Theatre at Dalhousie University, where she earned a BA with Honours. She worked briefly at Neptune Theatre in Halifax NS but quickly realized her real passion was painting. While she acknowledges the value of the quality instruction she received while at Dalhousie in drawing, painting, design and lighting, she has rarely looked back on that profession.

She paints regularly and exhibits her work where it can be seen by the public in many commercial galleries. She exhibited ten paintings in a three- artist show called Jubilation: New Beginnings, hosted by the Kings Playhouse Gallery PEI in April of 2021. She devotes time to improving and learning about art making, whether it is the form of a short online course through NSCAD in relief printing with printmaker Carrie Fisher or in earning an ALG Certificate for artists and art gallery workers led by staff at the Anna Leonowens Gallery. Julia gives the occasional invited artist talk, on art related topics such as Color Theory.

She is the newly elected President of CARFAC Maritimes (June 2021) and is the former Secretary to the board. Julia recently founded and is fostering a group of thirty developing plein air watercolor painters under the banner, Art Across Our Island. She organizes the outings and provides instruction and structure to their painting sessions. She has taught painting and drawing through the PEI Craft Council Inc and from her own studio the Purcell Parlour Gallery in Clyde River. Her artwork has been purchased by the City of Charlottetown, UPEI and the Art Bank of PEI. Her art work is in private collections all over North America. She also serves as an elected municipal councillor in Clyde River PEI and always strives to foster cultural activities in her community and to promote youth and other equity seeking groups. She has lived in Vancouver and Halifax, NS but calls PEI home now.
