Overview

The PEI Crafts Council (PEICC) invites proposals for artist residencies fostering innovation in craft and development of new work. We welcome proposals for self-directed residencies from emerging, mid-career, and established craft-based artists, local and worldwide. Our residencies offer a valuable opportunity to develop skills, explore techniques, create new work, and be immersed in a supportive community in a beautiful setting.

Duration of residencies may be between 1 week and 1 month and will be determined on a case by case basis. Studio space will be provided at the PEICC Studios at 94 Water St. in Historic Downtown Charlottetown, PEI.

Provided by the PEICC:
- Studio space in downtown Charlottetown
- Option for pop-up sales at the PEICC Studios
- Exhibition space
- Networking opportunities and promotion

Responsibility of the Artist:
- Travel costs and arrangements
- Accommodations costs and arrangements
- Materials
- Residency fee (see details below)

Application Process

To apply, submit the following items:
- A description of the project to be undertaken (this could be a materials exploration or following a particular theme or making a product etc.) 500 words max.
- A CV or list of related experience in your field of practice
- Proposed dates/timeline
- Community outreach (if any), e.g. talks or workshops or open studio time
- Other support requested (letters of support for grants, accessibility needs, etc.)

Selection Process

Applicants will be assessed by a jury of peers from the PEI Crafts Council membership.
Applications will be assessed for artistic merit, innovation, feasibility, and community impact.
There is a rolling deadline for this program and applications will be assessed on a bi-monthly basis. Applicants will be notified of their application status within 60 days.

We are seeking applicants who:
- Demonstrate the potential for creative and technical development.
- Work cooperatively, respectfully and responsibly in a shared space.
- Have a clearly defined project that is feasible within their proposed timeline (note that projects can be research/experimentation-based and do not have to involve a finished product).
- Have a clear understanding of health and safety protocols within a studio environment.
- Are interested in being a part of our growing community and network.

Materials

Artists-in-residence are responsible for providing their own materials.

Accessibility & Hours

The Studios can be accessed by artists-in-residence 24/7. The building, at this time, has stairs and no elevator. The space is shared with long-term tenants and we ask that visiting artists work in a respectful manner with tenants to ensure harmony in the space. Projects with a high noise or scent element will be assessed on a case by case basis, but we ask that applicants keep in mind that it is a shared space as they prepare their application.

Fees

All residency bookings require a $100 refundable damage deposit.
As the space is provided free of charge the PEICC expects the artists to share their project on social media acknowledging (tagging) the PEICC and our funding partner the City of Charlottetown.

Location & Accommodations

The PEICC Studios is a three-storey heritage building located at 94 Water St. in Downtown Charlottetown and is within easy walking distance of restaurants, shops, and theatres in the downtown core. Specific studio space will be determined by the needs of each application.

All studios include:
- Shared kitchenette space (fridge and microwave) on the 2nd floor
- Shared bathrooms on 2nd/3rd floors
- Utilities including wifi

Artists are responsible for securing their own accommodations if they are from away.
Artists are responsible for arranging their own travel and any associated costs. The PEICC can provide a letter of support for grants or other funding applications.

Community Outreach & Artist Workshops

Artists in residence can propose pop-up sales, exhibits, open studio time, workshops, talks, and other community engagement as relates appropriately to their project. The PEICC can offer support for promoting events and for space (including tables and chairs etc.) as needed. Collaboration is encouraged with other artists or community groups.
We welcome proposals from collectives and collaborative teams as well as individual artists.

ALL proposals should be submitted by email to peicraftscouncil@gmail.com

We are grateful for the support of our funders, the City of Charlottetown, which has made this opportunity possible.
