The Business of Craft Course

We are excited to announce that Jody Racicot  will be the facilitator for the course!

Jody Racicot is a lifelong artist, craftsman and teacher. His furniture has been featured in National publications and has been exhibited from BC to PEI.
Jody teaches the business of performing for Holland College’s school of Performing Arts.
His work can be seen at

Along with Jody's experience and enthusiasm, there will be a number of guest speakers to provide you with the most up to date information you need to run your craft business.

The Course:

The Business of Craft Course is a 10 week course, 3 hours per week.

The Speakers:
April 2 - INTRO TO CRAFT BUSINESS - no guest speaker

Yes, you can miss a class.   We will make sure to catch you up on anything you miss.

Yes, it is.   You will gain knowledge from your peers, guest speakers and be pointed towards resources which will help get you started in the right direction.

Intro to Branding and Product Photography

Come join Caley Joy Photography as we dive into how photography is one of the most powerful tools for marketing your modern business. During our afternoon workshop will we discuss; creating a cohesive brand through visual language, how to create images that will catch the eye of potential clients, how to set up a minimalist studio in any space, as well as, a live demonstration of photographing various local Etsy products.

Caley Aylward is a photographer based on Prince Edward Island. She is a lover of natural light, and is passionate about business and marketing. She believes in the power of influence that photographs can have on us, and our potential clients. She has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography from Ryerson University, and Bachelor of Education from Western University; the perfect combination for an afternoon of teaching the art of photographing your products for increased profit.

You are encouraged to bring a camera and 1-2 of your products which you will be able to use for practice.

Cost is $25 for Etsy Team PEI & PEI Crafts Council members, $35 non-members.

This event is a Potluck, so please bring a favorite dish.

 The Meeting is Called to Order at 7 pm.

PEI Workshops with Craft Alliance Atlantic

Presenter: Bernard Burton, Executive Director

Bernie has been involved in the Canadian craft industry now for over 32 years and has been involved in many aspects of the sector including: craft producer, retailer, administrator and volunteer. Over the past 12 years Bernard has done extensive research into the Licensing sector and has organized 10 educational missions to the Surtex Licensing trade show in New York. Export 101: Getting Ready to Export

 Have you been shipping your craft or artwork outside of Canada?  Are you aware of the rules and regulations with regards to Customs Clearance and Duties? Whether you are shipping large wholesale orders or one item to an Etsy client, this session has important information, you need to know. This session is a great introduction to Exporting. The session will focus on the requirements to become export ready and the logistics for export compliance for clearance of shipments outside of Canada. The session includes the Craft Alliance diagnostic online tools to determine whether your business is ready to export and what is required to become export ready. Topics will include; export diagnostic, product requirements, tariff codes, shipping logistics, paperwork and the general requirements for ease of doing business in the United States and other countries.

Demonstration Day – PEICC Centre for Craft (max 25 participants),  $25/person/day

  •   Open to PEICC Pottery members and PEI Potters Studio members with pre-registration

  • 10am to 4pm at the PEI Crafts Council Workshop room – Upstairs at the Craft Centre, 98 Water Street, Charlottetown

  • Demo style presentation 

  • Morning and afternoon coffee breaks

  • Bring your own lunch

-              Demonstration of advanced techniques in:

    • Assembling and altering thrown and molded forms

    • Slip decoration

    • Scraffito techniques

    • Use of glazes and underglazes


Hands-on Day – PEI Potters Studio (max 12 participants),  $50/person/day

  • Sunday Apr 14, 2019

  • Open to PEICC Pottery members and PEI Potters Studio members with pre-registration

  • 10am to 4pm at the PEI Potters Studio – in the Studio, 1 Victoria Park Driveway, Victoria Park, Charlottetown (beside the tennis courts).

  • Morning and afternoon coffee breaks

  • Bring your own lunch

Review of techniques from Day One
Hands on surface decoration techniques on participants’ pieces or tiles

    •   Glazes and pottery tools (supplied by Pottters Studio)

    • Each participant must bring 3-4 leather hard pieces to work on

Since the workshops are in two different locations, you must register for each separately if you would like to attend both days.  Combined cost for both days is $75. 

Registration will open in a separate blog post Sunday Feb 24th, 2019 at noon and will remain open until all available spots filled.  Payment taken upon arrival at the event (cash or cheque).
